Dr. Sen Nguyen, MD (she/her) is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Virginia, where she studied cultural anthropology and biology. After spending a year by the border in South Texas as an AmeriCorps volunteer, Dr. Nguyen returned to the University of Virginia for medical school and subsequently went on to complete her family medicine residency at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Before joining UCSF as core faculty, Dr. Nguyen worked in a small community health center in Western North Carolina providing comprehensive care for patients of all ages, regardless of the ability to pay.
Through these clinical experiences and their personal experience growing up as a queer, Vietnamese-American in the South, Dr. Nguyen strives to create space where individuals and families feel heard. She hopes to lift up voices from communities who have been historically excluded and purposely marginalized to work toward a more equitable society. She has particular interests on the intersectionality between gender, race, and queerness; trauma-informed care; health equity; racial justice; and reproductive health. Dr. Nguyen is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and World Professional Association for Transgender Health.
